From steep, sloping mountain forests to lush farmlands that evoke the English countryside, the Carolinas and Georgia offer a landscape as diverse and colorful as the personable demeanor of the region's residents. The tri-state area has aged gracefully with time, leaving in place an amiable drawl and such culinary traditions as hot buttered grits and fresh boiled peanuts, yet it has also managed to rival its Northern competitors in technology and style. Long burdened with a "Scarlett" reputation cluttered with pickup trucks and good ol' boys, these Southern states now boast bright, neon-lighted cities complete with cutting-edge architecture, high-tech industry, exhilarating sports events, and intricately designed highways--not to mention big-city gridlock.

Drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, in the mountains. It's a very windy and curvy road, you can't expect to get anywhere fast! But the scenery is gorgeous. This is the place to soak in the Applachian Mountains. They aren't rocky and snow-covered, but they have their own beauty. It's a very old range and the peaks are rounded and worn, covered with trees.

I love the mountains of North Carolina -- especially around Highlands. It's still mostly natural area with lots of wildlife and floral surroundings. Many of the places here were filmed in the movie Mohigans. Visit the waterfalls -- great places to hike!

The beautiful beaches on North Carolina's Outer Banks are highly recommended by our family. They are the most private and family oriented beaches of any place we know. The islands have at least 5 historical light house. The sand dunes and the Wright Brothers Memorial and much more!

Overview

Welcome to North Carolina

Traveling in North Carolina

You can tell a lot about a state by the names you find on the map. North Carolina’s places seem to be saying it’s a combination of food, folks, fun and faith. North Carolina's coast has welcomed visitors since the first explorers set foot on these sandy beaches over 400 years ago. Today, that tradition is still part of our heritage and we invite you to discover this special corner of the world with its wonderful variety of attractions and activities. This coastal plain encompassing over 300 miles of ocean front, extending westward to Interstate 95, is divided into three regions:
- The historic Northern Region
- The exciting Central Region
- The balmy Southern Region

Must Do

Mountains: Blowing Rock

Mountains: Blowing RockThe Blowing Rock is an immense cliff 4000 feet above sea level, over-hanging Johns River Gorge 3000 feet below. The phenomenon is so called because the rocky walls of the gorge form a flume through which the northwest wind seeps with such force that it returns light objects cast over the void. This phenomenon also named the local storybook village filled with upscale shops, unique attractions, outdoor adventure, performing and visual arts, fine dining and family restaurants, and a range of accommodations, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in the North Carolina Mountains.

Coast: Lost Colony Drama, Outer Banks

Coast: Lost Colony Drama, Outer BanksA 400 year-old mystery haunts Roanoke Island on North Carolina's Outer Banks. There, in 1587, about 120 men, women and children established the first English colony in the New World, then vanished without a trace, leaving historians and archaeologists with one of America's most perplexing mysteries. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paul Green, The Lost Colony tells their story in the dramatic setting of historic Waterside Theatre on Roanoke Island. Now, The Lost Colony has been attended by millions and brings all the elements of family entertainment together for an unforgettable evening under the stars.

Flora and Fauna Hikes in the North Carolina Mountains

Flora and Fauna Hikes in the North Carolina Mountains
Eons ago something earthshaking happened in North Carolina: Two continents collided, sending titanic plates of rock surging up into the sky. Millions of years later, after fussy carving and polishing by Mother Nature, a hiker's paradise was created. When the glaciers finally receded from these mountains they left behind more varieties of trees and flowers than exist in all of Europe. Discover this very old world with all its eclectic flora and fauna by hiking or biking one of the several trails in the North Carolina Mountains.
